This book tells the story of a marvellous mother: the Blessed Eurosia Fabris Barban (1866-1932), the fi rst person to be beatifi ed outside Rome during the pontifi cate of Benedict XVI, which event took place in Vicenza on 6th November 2005.

This book tells the story of the simple, humble life of a woman of the common people, who dedicated herself totally and heroically to her love for her family. She had nine children, of whom three became priests, and also welcomed another three into her family as adopted children.

Profoundly at one with Christ, in an intense Christian existence forged by prayer and charity, she opened up her pure and gentle heart, making her own life and that of whoever met her full of happiness and unshakeable joy in Divine Providence.

Esattamente nell’anno in cui il primo Papa che porta il nome del Poverello di Assisi ha voluto un Sinodo straordinario sulla famiglia esce la nona edizione della biografia della «prima Beata» del Papa Teologo Benedetto XVI, Eurosia Fabris Barban (1866-1932), di cui il Curatore fr. Gianluigi Pasquale OFM Cap. ne è il pronipote in linea diretta materna, da tutti conosciuti come «Mamma Rosa». Il biografo rimane il figlio il Frate Minore P. Bernardino Barban (1897-1980). Esaurite tutte le precedenti sette edizioni, l’VIII tradotta in inglese nel 2013 e pubblicata in Germania ha veicolato la figura di questa autentica mamma di famiglia e «mamma sacerdotale», nonché «Terziaria Francescana» fino oltreoceano.

Questo mio breve intervento è una testimonianza, anche se non diretta, su una meravigliosa figura di donna cristiana il cui modello è attuale anche per i nostri giorni: la beata Eurosia Fabris in Barban (1866-1932), dai più conosciuta come «Mamma Rosa », i cui resti mortali sono ora conservati nella chiesa parrocchiale di Marola, in provincia di Vicenza. 

Si tratta della mia bisnonna materna, la nonna di mia mamma Giovanna Barban, colei che mi ha dato alla luce.

Sono consapevole che è assai raro poter scrivere, per quanto indegnamente, su un proprio antenato che, secondo la Chiesa, gode già della beatifica gloria di Dio mentre i parenti sono ancora in vita.

Per questo narrerò qui dei dettagli inediti, che nemmeno la settima edizione della sua biografia – peraltro ormai esaurita – riporta.

In push for families, Vatican sees sainthood for mother of 11 ROME (AP)

An Italian mother who raised 11 children moved ahead on the road to possible sainthood Sunday amid a Vatican campaign in favor of large families.

The virtues of Fabris, who died in 1932, were honored Sunday in a beatification ceremony in Vicenza, near her native farming village in northern Italy. Beatification is the last formal step before possible sainthood. On Wednesday, Pope Benedict XVI praised large families and called for countries to approve legislation and other incentives to help them.

The pontiff has said there is no future without children. Presiding over the ceremony in Vicenza's cathedral was Cardinal Jose Maria Saraiva Martins, who heads the Vatican office overseeing the process for sainthood. Benedict's predecessor, John Paul II, stressed the importance of providing role models from daily life for Roman Catholic faithful.

"Mamma Rosa ... was comforting proof" that sainthood can come in the dailiness of life, said Saraiva Martins, who praised the woman for "the sweetness of her motherhood." Fabris was singled out by Vatican Radio as being a "dazzling model of holiness lived out in daily family life." "She knew how to transform her very large family into a school of holiness," Vatican Radio said on the eve of the ceremony.

The average number of children per woman in the European Union is 1.5, according to EU statistics, but in some countries, including heavily Roman Catholic Italy and Spain, the average is 1.3. Benedict has described large families as useful witnesses to "faith, courage and optimism" in society. Fabris, who was born in 1866, was described as being deeply religious from her childhood.

Besides the 11 children she raised, Fabris welcomed other children in need into her home. Three of her children became priests and another child became a nun. While John Paul used to lead the beatification ceremonies himself in St. Peter's Square or abroad while on pilgrimages, Benedict delegates top cardinals for the duty. However, he recently presided over a canonization, the ceremony to raise faithful to sainthood.
